Holidays in the winter wonderland of Altaussee

Snow, winter sports and lots of peace and quiet

Snow-covered scenery, mist on the lake and snowflakes dancing in the sunlight – Altaussee is a picturesque winter wonderland in the coldest season. The Seevilla is the ideal starting point and ‘temporary home’ to experience this winter fairy tale for yourself.

The Aussee winter is athletic, traditional and cosy, and shows guests its many facets.

Holidays in winter wonderland altaussee

Go for a walk in the wintry landscape, hear the pleasant melody of snow crunching under your shoes and be captivated by the glittering cold.

The local mountain to Altaussee, Loser, offers various winter sports on and away from the pistes. Winter hiking trails and a skating rink in the immediate vicinity of the hotel are just a couple of suggestions for how to spend your winter holiday at the Seevilla.

The joy of skiing

The skiing area on the Loser mountain impresses with perfect pistes that are not overcrowded, and wonderful panoramas. Skiing in peace, with relaxing breaks in the cabins and the vista of the surrounding mountain landscape is a true joy.

The Tauplitz lifts in Bad Mitterndorf offer another option to keep your winter holiday varied. They are a 15-minute drive away, but our Seevilla shuttle will be happy to transport you there.

Cross-country skiing through the winter wonderland

You can find idyllic and athletic trails for beginners, advanced skiers and pros in and around Altaussee. Sedately from the Loser skiing arena to the Blaa Alm past the Ödensee in Kainisch or quickly towards Bad Mitterndorf – Ausseerland has an impressive total of more than 200 km of cross-country skiing trails.

Traditional

Winter also brings with it a great many customs – beginning in December with Krampus and Saint Nicholas and culminating in the highlight of the ‘fifth season’, the Ausseer Fasching (carnival).

The Advent period intensifies the sense of Christmas spirit – snow-covered Christmas markets in Ausseerland and Salzkammergut and the traditional shows with Saint Nicholas and Krampus play their part in that.

Wolfgangsee Advent
The Wolfgangseer Advent is a worthwhile excursion. Wolfgangsee is a half-hour drive away, and once there you can travel from place to place by boat and explore the Christmas markets.

Bad Mitterndorfer Nikolospiel
According to the local history books, the Nikolospiel has been performed in Bad Mitterndorf every 5 December for over 100 years.

The Ausseer Fasching
The highlight of carnival in Ausseerland each year comes in the last three days. The letters are read out at various locations on the Sunday and bring some local rhyming ‘Hoppala’ to light. On the Monday, the “Trommelweiber” (drummer women), who are in fact men in costume, make their way through Altaussee, Bad Aussee and Grundlsee. The conclusion comes with the “Flinserl” in their splendidly decorated robes and the “Pless” characters on Mardi Gras Tuesday. Experience three days of high-spirited carnival atmosphere, which in 2017 was even named intangible cultural heritage, during your stay at the Seevilla.

Cosiness

You can relax and warm up in the Seevilla panoramic spa with a view of the lake. Enjoy the comforting warmth of a hot cup of tea from the Dirndl tea bar or one of the various saunas, or experience pure relaxation with a treatment in our very own ‘Sanctuary’.

In the Brahms Café, you can relax in a pleasant coffee house atmosphere while enjoying the daily newspapers or a good book. Ask about our literature chests – perhaps our selection of books can contribute to you enjoying some pleasant hours with us.

A horse and carriage ride offers a cosy opportunity to experience the winter landscape in the fresh air. The carriage picks you up from the hotel: from there you can revel in the silence, broken only by the trotting and small bells of the horses – it almost feels like a winter fairy tale.
